Meet Hudson. He is a 2-year-old Griffon/American Bulldog mix. He is currently weighing in at about 64 pounds. He has an interesting look to him because he has the Griffon coat mixed with the American Bulldog body. It works for him though. He is very friendly and loves to play. He knows a few different commands, including playing fetch!

He is a very strong dog, so having a harness versus a collar leash will probably work the best for him. He sure does like to run though! He is energetic, so he would be a great dog for an active family. Hudson has a sad story. Someone tied him up to a post in front of a store and left him there. The store owner tried to find him a home and couldn’t, so he brought him in to Athens Pets. The store owner said that he is good with kids, cats and other dogs.

We have found that he does like some, but not all dogs.  If you think you would be the perfect forever home for Hudson, please contact the Athens-Clarke County Animal Control at www.AthensPets.com or come by the shelter at 125 Buddy Christian Way in Athens. The shelter is open daily from 10AM - 4PM, except for Wednesdays and holidays. Their phone number is 706-613-3540.

Hudson’s ledger number is 40961. Please use this number when calling for him.

Meet Greta.  She came to the Athens dog shelter in the beginning of June, so her hold time is expired.  The pound is full and Greta is in immediate danger!  She is a wonderful pup who is about 2 years old and weighs in at about 53 pounds.  She’s a Pit mix with a big sweet smile and she loves showing of for the cameras!

She is a sweet girl who likes to play and then just sit back and watch the action while leaning up against her handler.  She obeys commands and loves to show off for treats.  She’s very loving and likes to follow her handler around the interaction pen playing.

Greta has had a problem with fleas and because of that she lost a good bit of hair on her backside.  Luckily, she’s been treated and the hair is starting to grow back.  Over time it will come back completely.  She definitely needs to be on a flea preventative year round though.

Come meet Greta and see her big smile and find out if you are her forever person and her forever home!

You can come visit all the dogs at the shelter at 125 Buddy Christian Way in Athens.  The hours are 10AM thru 4PM daily.  They are closed on Wednesdays and holidays.  You can look at other dogs at www.athenspets.net.  You can also donate to help out the animals in the shelter or even sponsor a specific animal by visiting the site as well.

Meet Wilbur - Our Pet of the Week

Wilbur can be found at the Athens-Clarke County Animal Control at 125 Buddy Christian Way in East Athens.  They are open daily from 10AM – 4PM, except for Wednesdays and holidays.  Wilbur is past his hold time and is in urgent need of a new forever home!  If you feel that Wilbur would be a good fit for your family, please come visit him and adopt.

Wilbur is a Staffordshire Terrier Mix and is approximately three years old.  He weighs about 51 pounds and very friendly with people and other dogs.

“Wilbur has a note on his kennel stating that he’s a little shy, but I can tell you he’s gotten over his shyness.  He came out of his kennel full of energy and ready to play.  When we reached the grassy area, he practically dove into the clover and then rolled around.   I know it had to feel better than the concrete floor of his run.  In the interaction pen, Wilbur had fun chasing balls, but bringing them back was not a part of his game.  Call him to you, though, and he’ll come running for some pets or belly rubs.  Wilbur is a happy, friendly fellow who’d love to meet you!”

“It’s nice to know that Wilbur likes other dogs.  A visitor brought her dog to the pound to meet some of the other dogs. Wilbur showed no aggression and enjoyed being with her dog.  Wilbur has always been friendly when other dogs pass his kennel and has touched noses with those that have wanted to greet him.  If you’re looking for a companion for your dog, Wilbur might just be the dog you’re looking for!”

Study Shows Link Between Flies And Parvovirus

6/8/2014

It seems that the rising heat is causing more of an issue than the norm in our pets.  We all know that the summer heat can cause dehydration in our pets very fast and also that our pups can burn their paws on the hot concrete.  But what about the flies?

Dr. Clarence Bagshaw, DVM, is the owner of Edgefield Veterinary Clinic in Edgefield, South Carolina and is also a part-time vet for the SPCA Albrecht Center and he has been studying flies.  Dr. Bagshaw has noticed a certain correlation between illness and the fly population in the spring and fall.  He has hypothesized that flies could be a vector for the Parvovirus, which is a deadly disease in puppies.

Bagshaw studied flies that were collected from 38 different shelters from Aiken, South Carolina down to Florida and as far north as Rhode Island.  His findings show that in 92 percent of the shelters that tested positive for Parvovirus, the shelters had direct open access to the outdoors through means of the guillotine door or other types of doggy doors.  Only 22 percent of all closed shelters, where the dogs were kept entirely indoors, tested positive for the Parvovirus.

Dr. Bagshaw’s findings are part of the reason why new up-to-date and state-of-the-art shelters are being built as closed designs.  This shows that there is a greater need for volunteers to get the dogs out to walk and play and most importantly, scoop and bag when the dog eliminates.

Parvovirus can live for up to a year in an environment and is highly contagious.  Flies are not the only way that it can be spread, and up until recently, the thought was that it was only spread in dog to dog contact.

So remember, while new puppies are adorable; make sure that your dogs are completely vaccinated before showing them off to others.
