Bring These Brothers Home

Jamal and Chunky are brothers. They are eight months old and are right at about 20 pounds each. They are a Chihuahua and Dachshund mix. They haven’t been at the shelter for very long, but they are quite happy around each other. They are a bit frightened by the new place and being in their pen. But whenever we let them out and let them just come to us, they love it.

Their owner surrendered them due to a move, but when they were brought in to us, they were very sweet and happy. So we feel for sure that they will relax soon and not be so frightened. According to their former owner, they are housebroken, good with other dogs, and lived with a teenage autistic child. We would love to see them go to the same fur-ever home, if possible, but more than anything just want to see them loved and in a good home with a good family.

If you want to come visit Jamal and Chunky and all of our other dogs and cats that are looking for their fur-ever families and homes, please come visit! We are located at 125 Buddy Christian Way in Athens. We are open daily from 10AM – 4PM, except for on Wednesdays and holidays. Our phone number is706-613-3540.

Livia Is Looking For Her Forever Home

7/28/2014

Picture
Meet Livia. She is such a sweet dog, but she has a sad story. Livia’s owner was like too many owners out there who let their dogs have litter after litter of puppies and then just decide they don’t want the mommies any more. Her owner gave her to a group of children that were playing at the playground and, of course, they played with her. But then they couldn’t keep her. So she ended up at the pound.

Livia is so sweet and loving. She is a little bit confused as to why she is at the pound. All she wants is for someone to love her and spend time with her and give her a forever home. She knows certain commands, such as sit, and doesn’t even expect a treat for them! She is calm and gentle. She doesn’t seem to mind other dogs as she just tends to ignore them and do her own thing. She seems to treat life like that, just simply taking it all in stride.

Livia has some skin issues, but that will most likely be treated with ongoing good nutrition and flea medicine. She loves her belly rubs, her walks and most of all people just loving on her.

If you want to come see Livia and all of the other dogs at the animal shelter, please go visit them and help a dog find their fur-ever home. They are located at 125 Buddy Christian Way in Athens. Their phone number is 706-613-3540. They are open daily from 10AM – 4PM except on Wednesdays and holidays.

Bella Is A Beautiful Black Lab Mix

Picture
Meet Bella.  She is a beautiful black lab mix that is around 35 pounds right now.  She's still in her puppy stage as she is less than a year old.

Bella is protective of the person she is with, so she would be a great watch dog for her forever home.  She isn't aggressive, but she likes to bark when she feels that her space is being invaded.  She just wants to make sure that you are aware that someone is there!

Bella loves to play and get treats.  She seems to be easily trainable and is very smart. She is already spayed and is great with other animals and people.  Her family had to move, so they had to bring her to us so that we could find her a forever home.  Bella is a little confused as to why she is in a strange new place and just wants to find a family to love her.

If you would like to meet Bella and any of the other dogs and cats that we have at the animal shelter, please come by and see us!  We are at 125 Buddy Christian Way in Athens and we are open daily from 10AM - 4PM, except for Wednesdays and holidays.  Our phone number is 706-613-3540.

Junip Is Great On A Leash And Loves Her Walks

Meet Junip. Boy does she love being loved on! Junip is an owner surrender due to financial reasons and the family only had her for a couple of months, so she is really looking for her fur-ever home this time. Junip can jump a four foot fence, so if Junip and you end up being the best of buddies, make sure that you are prepared for this trick!

She is about three years old and is an American Bulldog mix. Being a lady and all, we didn’t ask her what she weighs. She is good with kids and is super friendly. As a matter of fact, she lived with a five year old at her last home. She is very adventurous and still has that “puppy spirit”. When she came to the shelter, she was wearing a harness that had rubbed a spot raw on her chest. This means that she will probably do better with a different type of collar or gentle leader instead of a harness. We don’t want Junip to be in pain!

Junip has lots of energy and likes to jump around, but she still hasn’t jumped on people. This is great! She is so happy and is a major cuddlebug. She is great on a leash and loves her walks. If you feel like Junip might be your “soul dog mate,” then please come visit her!

You can see Junip and all of the other dogs available for adoption at 125 Buddy Christian Way in Athens. The shelter is open daily until 4pm except for Wednesdays and holidays.

Consider Sponsoring Clifford If You Are Unable To Adopt

7/3/2014

Picture
Meet Clifford.  He’s not the “Big Red Dog” that you’re thinking of!  He’s more of your medium sized tawny colored fella with a big personality.  He weighs in at about 45 pounds and right around a year old.  He is a American Bulldog/Hound mix.

Clifford responds well to commands and is eager to learn.  He gets excited sometimes, but remember that he is still a puppy so he will probably out grow this.  And he will still listen to your command to sit when given.  He likes his toys, but he likes attention from people even more.  And he really loves giving kisses!  When given praise, his tails wags a mile a minute and he just laps it up!

Come visit Clifford and take him for a walk to see just how fun and friendly of a pup that he is!  He is looking for his forever home with someone who will show him attention and lots of love.  Is that you?

Athenspets.net is a volunteer run website that showcases the animals from the Athens-Clarke County Animal Control and Animal Shelters.  The shelter is located at 125 Buddy Christian Way on the east side of Athens.  Their hours are from 10am through 4pm daily, except on Wednesdays and holidays.

If you can’t adopt a “fur-ever” friend, please consider sponsoring one.  These animals have a limited amount of time in the shelter to be adopted and they are always in need of sponsors in order to save lives.  You can make a difference.  And in the words of Bob Barker with the Price Is Right, “Don’t forget to spay and neuter your pets.”

Hudson Needs A Home - Stop By The Shelter Today

6/26/2014

Meet Hudson. He is a 2-year-old Griffon/American Bulldog mix. He is currently weighing in at about 64 pounds. He has an interesting look to him because he has the Griffon coat mixed with the American Bulldog body. It works for him though. He is very friendly and loves to play. He knows a few different commands, including playing fetch!

He is a very strong dog, so having a harness versus a collar leash will probably work the best for him. He sure does like to run though! He is energetic, so he would be a great dog for an active family. Hudson has a sad story. Someone tied him up to a post in front of a store and left him there. The store owner tried to find him a home and couldn’t, so he brought him in to Athens Pets. The store owner said that he is good with kids, cats and other dogs.

We have found that he does like some, but not all dogs.  If you think you would be the perfect forever home for Hudson, please contact the Athens-Clarke County Animal Control at www.AthensPets.com or come by the shelter at 125 Buddy Christian Way in Athens. The shelter is open daily from 10AM - 4PM, except for Wednesdays and holidays. Their phone number is 706-613-3540.

Hudson’s ledger number is 40961. Please use this number when calling for him.

Here is Greta - The Newest Pet of the Week

6/18/2014

Picture
Meet Greta.  She came to the Athens dog shelter in the beginning of June, so her hold time is expired.  The pound is full and Greta is in immediate danger!  She is a wonderful pup who is about 2 years old and weighs in at about 53 pounds.  She’s a Pit mix with a big sweet smile and she loves showing of for the cameras!

She is a sweet girl who likes to play and then just sit back and watch the action while leaning up against her handler.  She obeys commands and loves to show off for treats.  She’s very loving and likes to follow her handler around the interaction pen playing.

Greta has had a problem with fleas and because of that she lost a good bit of hair on her backside.  Luckily, she’s been treated and the hair is starting to grow back.  Over time it will come back completely.  She definitely needs to be on a flea preventative year round though.

Come meet Greta and see her big smile and find out if you are her forever person and her forever home!

You can come visit all the dogs at the shelter at 125 Buddy Christian Way in Athens.  The hours are 10AM thru 4PM daily.  They are closed on Wednesdays and holidays.  You can look at other dogs at www.athenspets.net.  You can also donate to help out the animals in the shelter or even sponsor a specific animal by visiting the site as well.

Meet Wilbur - Our Pet of the Week

6/13/2014

Picture
Wilbur can be found at the Athens-Clarke County Animal Control at 125 Buddy Christian Way in East Athens.  They are open daily from 10AM – 4PM, except for Wednesdays and holidays.  Wilbur is past his hold time and is in urgent need of a new forever home!  If you feel that Wilbur would be a good fit for your family, please come visit him and adopt.

Wilbur is a Staffordshire Terrier Mix and is approximately three years old.  He weighs about 51 pounds and very friendly with people and other dogs.

“Wilbur has a note on his kennel stating that he’s a little shy, but I can tell you he’s gotten over his shyness.  He came out of his kennel full of energy and ready to play.  When we reached the grassy area, he practically dove into the clover and then rolled around.   I know it had to feel better than the concrete floor of his run.  In the interaction pen, Wilbur had fun chasing balls, but bringing them back was not a part of his game.  Call him to you, though, and he’ll come running for some pets or belly rubs.  Wilbur is a happy, friendly fellow who’d love to meet you!”

“It’s nice to know that Wilbur likes other dogs.  A visitor brought her dog to the pound to meet some of the other dogs. Wilbur showed no aggression and enjoyed being with her dog.  Wilbur has always been friendly when other dogs pass his kennel and has touched noses with those that have wanted to greet him.  If you’re looking for a companion for your dog, Wilbur might just be the dog you’re looking for!”

Study Shows Link Between Flies And Parvovirus

6/8/2014

Picture
It seems that the rising heat is causing more of an issue than the norm in our pets.  We all know that the summer heat can cause dehydration in our pets very fast and also that our pups can burn their paws on the hot concrete.  But what about the flies?

Dr. Clarence Bagshaw, DVM, is the owner of Edgefield Veterinary Clinic in Edgefield, South Carolina and is also a part-time vet for the SPCA Albrecht Center and he has been studying flies.  Dr. Bagshaw has noticed a certain correlation between illness and the fly population in the spring and fall.  He has hypothesized that flies could be a vector for the Parvovirus, which is a deadly disease in puppies.

Bagshaw studied flies that were collected from 38 different shelters from Aiken, South Carolina down to Florida and as far north as Rhode Island.  His findings show that in 92 percent of the shelters that tested positive for Parvovirus, the shelters had direct open access to the outdoors through means of the guillotine door or other types of doggy doors.  Only 22 percent of all closed shelters, where the dogs were kept entirely indoors, tested positive for the Parvovirus.

Dr. Bagshaw’s findings are part of the reason why new up-to-date and state-of-the-art shelters are being built as closed designs.  This shows that there is a greater need for volunteers to get the dogs out to walk and play and most importantly, scoop and bag when the dog eliminates.

Parvovirus can live for up to a year in an environment and is highly contagious.  Flies are not the only way that it can be spread, and up until recently, the thought was that it was only spread in dog to dog contact.

So remember, while new puppies are adorable; make sure that your dogs are completely vaccinated before showing them off to others.

The Dangers That Lurk In Your Yard

5/28/2014

Picture
Are there dangers lurking in your yard that could hurt your pet?  The best way to know and prevent harm to your pet is to do a little research ahead of time and know what to look for.

Everywhere you turn you see digging, whether it is people or your family dog, planting that garden, burying a bone, and relaxing in the yard.  According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Animal Control Center, experts field thousands of calls about pets that have had potentially hazardous contact with insecticides, weed killer and pet-toxic plants. (Lucas, 2014).

Here are some things to think about.

  1. Cocoa mulch has become very popular in landscaping over the past few years.  It is made with the cocoa bean shells, which makes it smell wonderful to people and dogs alike.  It also has the same ingredient that is in chocolate that causes toxicity in dogs.  If your dog eats some of this, call your vet right away.
  2. The plant that is the most popular when it comes to toxicity in dogs is the sago palm, which is popular on patios and        in gardens.  Everything about this plant is toxic.  Other plants that can make pets sick include: aloe, amaryllis, African daisies, and alocasia.
  3. Compost piles are great for going green, but not so much for the family pooch.  If your dog gets sick from ingesting your compost pile, you will know it pretty fast, as in within 30 minutes.  Call your vet.  Also, don’t dump grease in your yard or compost pile.
Fertilizers and insecticides are poison to animals.  While most of them are not toxic in small doses, it is recommended that the family dog stays off the lawn for a while after treating with fertilizers and insecticides.  If the dog can be kept off the lawn for a few days, even better.  Again, if you spot any symptoms of illness, call the vet immediately.
